Hartford Area Career & Technology Center
Human Services is a general study of working with people and learning how to serve or assist others. Within the Human Services program at the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center (HACTC), we learn of the everyday struggles some people deal with in their lives. We learn various skills to help us better understand how to work with people from all walks of life. For example, we learned about child and elder abuse, how to recognize the signs and what actions would be best to take in this type of situation. We also learned about situations others face in their daily lives such as Autism and Alzheimer's disease. We learn the best way to go about interacting with others in a positive manner and who may be in situations less fortunate than our own. Real life experiences help us to learn job skills in a hands-on manner through our job placements.
Job Placement makes the learning experience much more realistic and has given me a better perspective on what the real world is going to be like. I worked at a daycare for my first job placement. I have learned I cannot speak or treat children as I would speak to my peers. This placement gave me more insight to the proper way to take care of people within a specific age group. For my second job placement, I currently have the privilege to work with students with special needs. I really enjoy seeing people strive so hard to learn the things that may come easy to others. Their attitudes about wanting to do something so badly is honestly exciting. It gives me hope that there are still people who want to learn not because they have to, but because they want to.
Personally, I feel the Human Services program can help people come out of their shell. It has given me the opportunity to really open up and connect with the people around me. The longer I personally work with someone the better the connection I establish with that person. Within the Human Services field, connection is everything. It is important to be pleasant enough for a person to want to open up to you, to want to trust you and to let you in. The main key to being successful in the Human Services program is keeping up a positive attitude as well as remembering to pay attention to other’s personal needs and figure out how to best serve them.
