Cosmetology

Cosmetology

My name is Maegan Carbino and I’m a Senior at South Royalton High School. I only found out that I wanted to become a Cosmetologist my Junior year. SoRo students always have the opportunity to go on field trips to the Randolph Technical Career Center (RTCC) because that is where SoRo students normally go when interested in a technical career center. In my Junior year we were also introduced to the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center (HACTC), in White River Junction, VT, as an option if RTCC did not offer the class we were interested in. When I heard HACTC offered cosmetology, I became very interested.

I missed the field trip to HACTC that a lot of the SoRo students went on, and they said it was awesome there, which made me even more excited to look into it. My guidence counselor at SoRo suggested that I should go to the HACTC open house just so I know if it’s really for me or not. I did, and we went to the Cosmetology room and spoke with Mrs. Dunham. She explained what goes on in the classroom: how they do practicals, weekly article reactions, and tests and quizzes. Then a student showed me around the room, which was very helpful and fun because it really feels like a real salon in there. I also met Mr. Heavisides, or as most of us at HACTC call him, H. He seemed like a very nice person and like he was very happy to see me, even though it was his first time meeting me.

Being at HACTC is very different than being at SoRo, it is so much bigger there and there are so many more faces. The environment there is so comfortable and I really felt like I was meant to be there. I was a little nervous at first but I started to make friends in no time, all the girls are very welcoming and nice. I am on a different level than all the other girls so I am an independent. My goal is to just move along fast and still learn and soak everything up.
