Human Services

Human Services

The Human Services (HS) program at the HACTC is about giving back to the community without having to be asked.

Our class has taken on many projects over  the past year and a half. We have made cards for Veterans on Veterans Day as well as Christmas cards for patients at the VA Hospital. We delivered cards and sang to the residents of Brookside Nursing Home. We decorated, filled and hand delivered 100 goody bags with kids’ toys and activities to the Department of Children and Family Services.  We have prepared numerous meals and contributed to a food drive for The Upper Valley Haven’s Adult Shelter.

Our Poverty Project, our most comprehensive community service, took two months to complete. Homeless Outreach Specialist, Dianne Munson, of the Tri-County Community Action Project, spoke with our class about the severe struggles people who are homeless currently face.  She inspired us to directly help people who are homeless in the Upper Valley. Our class raised over $500 plus collected at least 20 bags full of warm clothes, shoes, books, blankets, sleeping bags, tents and more! We presented our donations to Dianne right before the Christmas break, and she will make sure all items are directly given to those who are homeless and living in poverty. We appreciated many generous donations from local individuals and businesses.

This class also goes beyond simply reading textbooks and learning about Lifespan development.  We have been given the opportunity to work in real life settings, experience new things, explore potential careers, and learn how to overcome obstacles. On behalf of the 2017 Human Services class, we would like to say thank you by giving back to everyone who impacted our growth in the past two years. Your support has helped us reach where we are today, and strive to be tomorrow.
