Health Sciences Students Attend HOSA Fall Leadership Conference

Health Sciences Students Attend HOSA Fall Leadership Conference

By William Brannen and Brett Lamadeleine

On October 30, 2018, our Health Sciences class at the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center (HACTC) had the privilege to attend the HOSA Fall Leadership Conference at the Hanover Inn. HOSA Future Health Professionals is a career and technical student organization that provides a step ahead for students who would like to enter into the medical field. With over 200,000 members nationwide, HOSA is the largest organization that prepares students for future health professions.

Upon arrival, hundreds of students, teachers, and health care representatives merged together into a large ballroom. The NH/VT HOSA State Officers opened the conference, and recognized all HOSA officers, teachers, and student award winners from both the Spring HOSA Competition and the International HOSA Competition.

Next, Dr. Susanne E. Tanski, a Pediatrician from DHMC, was welcomed on stage and provided us with a brief history of why she fights against tobacco and nicotine usage. She gave an informative presentation on vaping and tobacco products, and their effects on people physically and mentally.

We then had a great lunch at the Dartmouth College Cafeteria, ‘53 Commons. While we ate, we chose three afternoon workshops to attend. After lunch, we went back to the Hanover Inn, and attended workshops with people who worked in different parts of the medical field.

For each workshop, a medical professional talked to us about what they do, the impact of what they do, and explained the usage of some of their equipment. We had only enough time to see three presentations, but we enjoyed seeing different job opportunities, like a Flight Paramedic, and Wound Care Specialist, an Athletic Trainer, and a Cardiac Specialist. These were only four of the many different presentations that we had the option to see. We had fun meeting new people, making friends, and having the privilege to be there. We look forward to being part of the next meeting in the Spring, and are honored to be members of this organization!
