Computer Technology Applications - Nick Brooks

Computer Technology Applications - Nick Brooks

My name is Nick Brooks.  I am from Hartford High School and for the past semester have been taking Mr. Martelle’s Computer Technology Applications class taught at the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center.  I am attending this class to gain the skills I will need to achieve my dream of becoming a game designer as well as the skills necessary to be successful in the Information Technology field.
Mr. Martelle’s Computer Technology Applications class at HACTC is truly a haven for nerds of all kinds. Every day students in this class face new challenges to hone in on their skills and build a higher understanding in all areas of computing.  On any given day, students may have to build a website from scratch using HTML, and the next, the entire class period can be spent in the workshop discovering how to repair the hardware of a computer system.  The pace of this class is steady, manageable, and always leaves students with something to do.
Recently in this class we have been learning website design using HTML, HTML5, and Dreamweaver.  Mr. Martelle sets basic goals for his students to achieve. He allows them time to figure out how to accomplish those goals and provides needed help to students who get stuck on certain aspects of the sites. Every day the students’ knowledge increases, adding new software skills that are necessary in becoming a good hardware or software engineer.
Outside of the computer lab, Mr. Martelle’s students dive deep inside the bodies of computers, learning each part by heart and the role it plays in making the computer work.  So far this year, time has been spent learning about power supply units, hard drives, disk drives, and the motherboard; I expect by the end of this year all of Mr. Martelle’s students will know exactly what makes a computer tick.  Time has also been spent fixing old, broken computers and troubleshooting the causes of errors within the system.  This practice is invaluable to students looking for work in the IT department.
Overall, Mr. Martelle’s class is a beacon to all nerdlings lost in the dark. It gives them the direction and knowledge they will need to thrive in the technological world, as well as a chance to become the full-fledged nerds he knows they can be.  This class is an amazing asset to the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center and is my favorite class for sure.  I recommend that all kids around the Upper Valley interested in technology join us in our mastery of the tech. world to bring forth the future.  Consider this a calling to all nerds; if you want to succeed in tech join us in our fun and learn how to be the best nerd you can be.
