Cosmetology by Katelyn Yoder

Cosmetology by Katelyn Yoder

Look to the FUTURE! Were the last words us new seniors and juniors saw and heard before returning to Cosmetology this year. Last year and years previous, the Cosmetology program at the HACTC was held in West Lebanon at the New England School of Hair and Design taught by Stacey Dunham. This year the program has been moved to the HACTC joining the HACTC family and Mrs. Dunham has continued as the instructor. As seniors, we are especially excited to see our new room and remain with our instructor after being at NESHD for a year. We had plenty of fun and enjoyed the NESHD facility but there was one thing missing; more time. Traveling to Lebanon everyday took a significant chunk of our learning time away. When the first day of school arrived we were all so excited to see our new room and equipment. It still was not ready and gave us even more suspense. We were finally allowed in the third week of school.
We were all speechless, taking in the scene of our room. We ran around touching everything and playing with our new equipment. This year we have more personal stations where we can keep a set of all tools with us to use everyday without having to search for them. We also have two new shampoo stations that we can actually stand behind the client to wash their hair instead of reaching over them. One of our favorite things we received in our new classroom were updated irons that take seconds to heat up creating smoother and quicker styles. So far this year there has not been one complaint about being in a smaller room. We actually like it better. We honestly could not be any happier.
Being at the HACTC this year gives us more instruction time and one-on-one time with our instructor. We were a little worried that Mrs. Dunham would not be moving with us, and that would have been hard if she did not. All of us made a close and lasting connection with our instructor. She has always been there to help us when we need it, gives us clear instructions, and more importantly always has a positive attitude. Being in a smaller facility has also brought our already small class (class of five) even closer this year. We are all more than willing to help each other and cheer each other up when one of us is down. It also gives us the opportunity to connect with the rest of the students from the other programs. The atmosphere of the Cosmetology program here at the HACTC is pure positivity and we are always looking forward. We waited a long time for the new room and finally have it.
Later on this year, the Cosmetology room will be painted and the rest of the decor will be coming in. We are still in a little suspense for the full transformation, but so far with the renovations you would have never known it was a simple conference room if you never visited it before. Waiting for the full transformation is more excitement for us all. At the beginning of the year, we could not even imagine the conference room it used to be could now be the salon it is quickly becoming. We are only a quarter of the way through the year and the Cosmetology Program has been completely transformed. Not only by the brand new room and equipment, but all of our attitudes too. We are all much happier being in tighter quarters, remaining with the same instructor, and being able to interact with the other students at the HACTC. All we are doing now is continuing to look into the future for ways to improve ourselves and the Cosmetology program for students to come.
