Health Sciences at HACTC

CB (1)My name is Caleb Buchanan, and I am a senior at the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center (HACTC). Early in my high school career at Windsor High School, I knew I wanted to be in the medical field but I really wasn’t sure if I wanted to be in an ambulance or in a hospital setting.

I enrolled in Health Sciences at the HACTC my junior year and met a whole new crowd of people along with a new teacher. Ms. Johnson is and will forever be my favorite high school teacher. A short period of time after starting Health Sciences, I came to realize that specializing in pediatrics was a strong rewarding goal to have. When I turned 15 I took a job at the Windsor Recreation Department which has a summer camp for young kids. The next two summers I worked as a lifeguard at a local pond in Windsor where the highlight of my day was when the summer camp kids came down for a couple hours. I love interacting with kids and just being around them.

Health Sciences has given me opportunities to get a perspective on a number of different departments in a hospital. On Tuesdays and Thursdays we participate in Cooperative Education, taking a bus to Alice Peck Day (APD) Memorial Hospital to shadow healthcare professionals. I am very appreciative of everyone making it possible for me to go onto Co-ops, and I am very excited to start working at APD and working towards my LNA very soon.

Health Sciences has also given me the opportunity to become CPR certified, and take two college courses, Medical Terminology and Psychology. Anyone in high school that is thinking about health care as a career, I would highly recommend Health Sciences at the HACTC because of the success I have had in it.
